Understanding Liters Per 100 Kilometers (L/100km)

Liters per 100 kilometers (L/100km) is the standard metric unit for measuring vehicle fuel consumption across Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and China. Unlike distance-per-volume metrics (like MPG or km/L), L/100km measures actual fuel volume consumed over a fixed distance of 100 km.

L/100km = (Total Liters Consumed ÷ Total Kilometers Driven) × 100

Why Volumetric Measure Matters

Because L/100km is directly proportional to fuel used, calculating fuel cost savings is linear. Upgrading from a 12 L/100km vehicle to an 8 L/100km vehicle saves exactly 4 liters of fuel every 100 kilometers, regardless of vehicle model.

Conversion Guide: L/100km to MPG & km/L

L/100km to US MPG

US MPG = 235.215 ÷ L/100km

Example: 8.0 L/100km = 235.215 ÷ 8.0 = 29.40 US MPG.

L/100km to km/L

km/L = 100 ÷ L/100km

Example: 8.0 L/100km = 100 ÷ 8.0 = 12.5 km/L.

Frequently asked questions

Divide the total liters consumed by total kilometers driven, then multiply by 100. Formula: (Liters ÷ Kilometers) × 100 = L/100km. For example, if you used 45 liters to drive 600 km: (45 ÷ 600) × 100 = 7.5 L/100km.

For modern gasoline vehicles, under 6.0 L/100km is exceptional (hybrids and efficient diesels). Between 6.0 and 8.0 L/100km is good for sedans and compact crossovers. Between 8.0 and 11.0 L/100km is average for midsize SUVs, while over 12.0 L/100km is typical for full-size trucks and large V8 SUVs.

Divide 235.215 by your L/100km figure. For example: 235.215 ÷ 7.5 L/100km = 31.36 US MPG.

Divide 100 by your L/100km figure. For example: 100 ÷ 7.5 L/100km = 13.33 km/L.

Unlike MPG (which measures distance per volume), L/100km measures volume consumed over a fixed distance. Therefore, a smaller number means you burned less fuel to cover 100 kilometers, representing superior fuel efficiency.
